Image mosaics for biomedical visualization

In diverse biomedical imaging applications, one often encounters the need for high resolution images of an area larger than the eld of view of the imaging device. Traditionally the human expert reads diagnostic information from several partial images, manually or mentally assembling them into a whole. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the use of computer mosaic methods for biomedical applications. Automatically mosaicked images help increase the e ciency and accuracy of biomedical visualization and measurement. In this paper, we discuss the issues involved in forming biomedical image mosaics and using them. We also review the literature on this topic, describing speci c applications in which image mosaics have proved to be useful. 2
